Leafy Greens Garden April 22

Now that my arugula, spinach, bok choy, and kale are clearly marked in rows and have grown, I can go in and add seed to were the dogs ran through the garden. Also, I see that I can make the rows a bit longer so this is was my project yesterday. I also weeded the garden.

Here you can see I’ve made my rows longer and filled in seed where there was none for my arugula

My spinach looks great and doesn’t seems to need any additional seed

My Bok Choy progress- nothing needed to be done here

My Kale also needed some fill in seed

Vegetable Garden Leafy Greens

My Arugula, Spinach, and Bok Choy have sprouted through the ground! Hurray! I thought I lost the seeds during a long abnormal spell of cold rainy snowy weather.  Alas…they are coming up.

I planted my Kale seeds on Thursday the 9th so we should start seeing those in about 2 weeks give or take a few days.

I have one section of my garden for all my leafy greens. The section is about 16′ long by 3′ wide. and planted in rows. You can see the definition of each row as the seeds start to grow. Oh and I should mention my dog occasionally has a brain freeze and runs through my garden. I’m always missing sprouts in areas where paw prints were. I just wait to see where I need additional seeds and add more seed to those areas…no biggie. This way I end up with complete rows.

With these types of greens, I just sprinkle seeds in a row about 1″ deep and lightly cover with soil. I do not thin my leafy greens plants when they are growing . I just let them all grow and never ever had any kind of issues, just heaping sections for the pickin’.  You can , of course, thin your sprouts if you would like for a more neat appearance. It does make for easier weeding if you thin your plants out, providing easy access to the weeds. I don’t mind the thickness of the greens and it kills me to pull out a perfectly good living sprout. I do not do this with my other veggies like tomatoes, peppers, ect… they need room to grow so thinning is essential.

Anyway, this is were we’re at in Mid April and everything seems to be right on schedule.

Vegetable Growing Week April 8th

Its been about a week or so since my last update on my veggies I started from seed.

Its been raining and cloudy for about 4 days now so my poor plants are begging for sun, as am I. Its looking like another couple days of yucky weather ahead but nice, hopefully, for the weekend.

I’ve planted Arugula, Spinach, Bok Choy, and Kale in the garden from seed and they are now starting to come up. Ill take a pic when the nasty weather stops but I see rows happening which is exciting and I love Arugula so cant wait!!

Here are the cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant.

Vegetable Garden Start of Season 2015

Now that the weather is breaking, I started some vegetables indoors from seed. I started Tomatoes, beef steaks and plum, Eggplant, Cucumbers, and Peppers. I always do this and what actually makes it, great! What doesn’t I just go buy at the Farm Market. Hey, at least I tried. I don’t have a lot of extra space inside, wish I did, and trying to find the right sunlight can be a challenge. But I still make the effort. I always feel a great accomplishment when they end up actually growing and producing. And hey, I saved a few bucks too! It cost 1.50 for a pack of seeds that can grow more than you’ll need and costs $3-$5 and higher  for plants, depending on the size

Started from fig cutting

Started from fig cutting

I also took some cutting from my fig tree in February and wrapped them in a damp paper towel and stored in a ziplock. To my surprise, they rooted. Its March 27th and this is what they look like now. Not to shabby hu?

My new venture this year is potatoes. Now, my garden is only 3′ wide. I don’t have enough garden space so I am growing them in a big tall container. They say it can be done so I’ll keep you posted on that one. They are already outside which normally is ok but since I planted them it snowed, of course, and the temperature is below the norm. I keep peekin’ on them to see if any sprouts have come up but nothing yet. Its been about 1 1/2 weeks.
